Research of dairy products market

The current dairy products market in Ukraine is a dynamically developing and highly competitive sector of food products market. In 2004 dairy market capacity made 1 567 thousand tons (or 1 576 million dollars).

Average annual rates of dairy market growth in 2001-2004 made 17,3 %. Growth was registered in all segments, the highest growth rates were in the markets of : cheeses - 24,9 %; canned milk - 27,2 %; dry dairy products - 21,7 %; whole-milk production - 19,2 %.

THE PURPOSES

The present report is the final document of the project devoted to research of the market of dairy products of Ukraine which Investment and consulting group " Astarta-Tanit " carried on in April - May, 2005.

The research is an annual analytical project and is carried out for expansion of sphere of consulting services provided and for more complete satisfaction of clients needs in quality informational analytical products.

Basic purposes of research:

   - To reveal the largest operators of dairy business of Ukraine;
   - To define general dairy market capacity and that of it's separate segments in 1999-2004;
   - To define current growth rates of the dairy market and to forecast the future development of branch;
   - To present the clients an extensive informational and analytical base on the dairy market of Ukraine.

TECHNIQUE AND THE DATA

The given report is based on utilization of the official statistical and expert data, and also on analytical estimations of experts of ICG "Astarta-Tanit" and will structurally consist of 8 interconnected sections.

The analysis was conducted on the basis of the data for 1999-2004. Basic information sources were accounts, reviews and analytical materials of departmental and branch organizations of various states, of the largest manufacturers, of the trading houses, and also materials of the scientific and technical periodical and non periodical press, materials of the international exhibitions, expert estimations of experts of the branch, field researches data. Researches were carried out with quantitative and quality analysis methods.

Names of the groups incorporating assets of various manufacturers, used in the research, are not officially accepted and are based on the name of the main trademark or of the basic founder. Thus at the analysis of groups their activity only in the dairy market has been considered.

The estimation of market capacity of Ukraine in money terms has been conducted disregarding milk and dairy products, produced by rural households for own needs and does not include the data on children's alimentary products.

THE SUMMARY

The market

The market capacity on separate dairy products for 1999-2004 in money and natural terms is determined, the factors influencing consumption in separate segments are analyzed, key characteristics of separate markets, basic trends and features are identified.

Export-import activity in separate markets is analyzed, the geographical structure of external economic operations is investigated.

On the basis of a scenario analysis forecasts of the future dairy market capacity of Ukraine for the period up to 2012 are constructed at three variants of development: basic scenario, best-case scenario and worst-case scenario. On the basis of the factors influencing consumption, rates of market capacity change are defined.

Positions of leading players of the dairy market are analyzed:
     - Capacities
     - Production of separate groups of products
     - Shares of the market

Changes of shares of the largest players and number of the enterprises in 1999-2004 in the separate dairy markets are evaluated. The basic tendencies of production volumes changes for separate products are determined.

Export-import flows on separate market segments and formation of consumer price of dairy products are considered. The factors influencing formation of the price, range of production of basic dairy products manufacturers by segments and representation of production of leading manufacturers in commercial networks and shops of Kiev are analyzed.

Basic directions of investments of dairy processing enterprises are determined.

The property

Key players of dairy market of Ukraine and their market shares are determined, the structure of the property of separate players is considered, their position in all-Ukrainian volumes of production on separate products is calculated.

Raw material

Milk manufacture in all categories of facilities in 1999-2004 and volumes of milk purchases by dairy enterprises in 1999-2004 are analyzed. Tendencies of development of raw milk market of in 2004 are analyzed.

Finance

Sectors of incomes reception in the market of dairy products in Ukraine are considered: reception of raw milk; primary processing of milk; production and packing of dairy products; organization of sales.

The information on charges of key market operators and on yield of dairy business in Ukraine is presented, process of price formation and chain of added value creation is described.

On the basis of financial reports of dairy products manufacturers ratings are constructed on the basic groups: city milk plants, butter and cheese making plants, manufacturers of milk powder and caned milk factories.

Authority

The basic features of the state policy of regulation and development of dairy branch of Ukraine (basic legal regulations regulating the activity of dairy branch of Ukraine; export-import conditions of dairy products sales), and also world practice of granting the activity in dairy branch are considered.

Science

International and national requests to the quality of the dairy raw material used for production of dairy production, basic branch standards of dairy products, general technological milk processing schedule are considered.

Ratings

On the basis of the data on export operations on separate market segments the consolidated ratings of exporters and recipients of dairy products in 2004 are presented.
